Rating: My bookshelf
Reading Level: Early Elementary
I’m really thankful for my sister-in-law who recommended this series. As you might expect from a Focus-on-the-Family-endorsed children’s book, there really is not much to critique.
Possible Concern:
- Peril. My 6-year-old son stopped reading it when he became frightened when Erik the Red threatened to make the kids his slaves. My son is a sensitive soul, and I expect most 6-year olds might not have the same issue.
Things I like:
- Fruit of the Spirit. The main characters display gospel fruit of peace, kindness, compassion, faith in God, and forgiveness.
- Educational. The main characters encounter real historical figures
- Appropriate. The adventures are thrilling but not too scary or gory, and there is no inappropriate young romance
It may be helpful to know that I thought Book 2: Attack at the Arena was much scarier than this one, which might just be because I’ve watched movies that have scary gladiator moments.
The reading level is about the same as The Boxcar Children.
