Rating: Needs Parent Supervision

Another great boxcar children book with a happy ending! However, this one has a couple potential concerns:

  • Pagan worship? The family finds a big rock that has been carved into a face (like Easter island) and someone comments that this probably was a temple.
  • False views about safety and English speakers. The children assume that a cannibal wouldn’t speak English and in another place assume that someone speaking English is safe. Neither assumption is healthy, especially the latter—just because someone doesn’t speak English doesn’t mean they’re not safe and visa versa.

These would be good conversations with your young ones if you plan to let them read this one.
