The Distance Between Me and the Cherry Tree by Paola Peretti

Rating: Not for me

Reading Level: Middle School

This book seemed like it was going to be really powerful but I just didn’t enjoy reading it and never finished. To be fair, it is a tough story about a girl who is going blind & wrestling with it.  But the poor girl is grasping at meaning in the most unhealthy ideas.

Possible Concerns:

• Talk of Monsters in the dark.
• She’s told she has a 3rd eye.
• She prays to Cosimo, a book character
• There’s talk of an Amazon woman removing her breasts
• She wonders if Trees have giants’ spirits living in them
• She wonders if her grandma’s spirit is in a tree
• She wants Pencils with Egyptian gods on them
• She takes a meditation dream nap
• Grandma didn’t believe in angels; said I was her angel.

I just don’t think this one is helpful.
