Rating: Not for me
I just didn’t like this one as much as Misfits (Royal Academy Rebels Book 1). The writing isn’t as high of quality, and the characters aren’t nearly as well-developed. Their motives and intentions flip flop in ways that are confusing to the reader. Did the new characters trap the newcomers because they were afraid of them? Why did they change their minds about getting rid of them? It just isn’t well-developed. Even one of the main characters all of a sudden scrapes his hand through his “blonde” hair when the previous book underlined his jet-black hair, the latter of which made sense because he was Snow White’s Brother. The climax is predictable, and overall I felt this was a let-down from the first book.

Poor writing aside, there may be other aspects families are not excited about. While at face value I don’t mind that this book introduces some gender role reversal (a young girl is a mechanic and a young boy is into costume design), they’re not really well-done and feel forced. Moreover, to me the author is trying to hard when the mechanic doubles as a young witch (so a girl has to be a witch and use magic to be a good mechanic?) and in the next book the costume designer is awkwardly described as wearing striking eye shadow in a point where it makes no sense for that to be of interest to the reader.

Overall, I was disappointed that this just wasn’t the same caliber or creativity as Book 1.

I also was not happy with Book 3 in the Royal Academy Rebels series: Heroes.
