Rating: Not for me
Reading level: Middle/High School
I can’t decide if my issue is with Shakespeare, or with his culture.
Major Concerns:
- Lack of respect for women. A woman is forced to marry, her husband treats her horribly, she is completely worn down, and eventually gives up her will to fight. This is posited as a victory?
- More lack of respect for women. In the climax the husbands summon their wives in the same way a dog-owner summons his animal. The man who was a jerk to his wife has trained her to come, and that is the ironic happy ending?! Really?!!!
Things I liked:
- N/A.
Come on, Shakespeare. You can do better.
At any rate, I just can’t recommend this one—UNLESS it is used to critique the culture.
