Rating: Not for me
Reading Level: High School
Matthew’s retellings of Shakespeare’s plays are the Cliff’s notes for the Cliff’s notes! In about 15 minutes, I caught some main points of Hamlet—which is 15 minutes too much of my life that I can never get back.
While the reading level is early elementary, the story is all about revenge and deception, which makes it more suitable for a much older audience, if any. The story also has Hamlet listening to the advice of a ghost (BTW, the advice is to murder the king). Most of the biblical research I’ve done suggests ghosts/communication with the dead is likely demonic and not wise. So the fact that the ghost is correct (the current king did murder Hamlet’s father) just seems to reinforce bad habits.
Moreover, the story seems to raise up revenge; and I prefer teaching my kids that it is God’s job to avenge.
I much preferred Macbeth; it illustrated the dangers of sin.
