Rating: Needs Parent Supervision
Reading Level: Middle/High School (due to content)
I was not expecting to like Macbeth after wishing I could un-read Hamlet. It was pretty clear there would be witches, and I prefer to steer clear of the occult. But I have to admit, it was an incredible stores illustrating the destructive nature of sin. Macbeth’s ambition leads to treachery, which leads to more lies & evil, until he is utterly consumed by it. Their co-conspiring drives he and his wife apart, eventually driving him mad.
Possible concerns:
- Murder
- Occult (witches, spells)
- Deception
- Overall a very dark dark feel
- Marital strife; a woman who is a terrible wife.
Things I liked:
- The connectedness of sin. Sin leads to more sin.
- Listening to witches and the occult is never good. Macbeth listens to witches, and this leads to his own doom.
While the reading level is early elementary, the story is all about murder, plus more murder, which makes it more suitable for a much older audience. However, the whole story serves as a reminder of what God warns Cain in Genesis: “Sin is crouching at the door, & you must rule over it.” I’d recommend this only with parent supervision, as the discussions could be very valuable.
