Rating: Some Families May Like It
Parents will need to decide for themselves whether this is a good fit for their families. Potential concerns:
- The main character struggles with jealousy/envy/anger when her friend decides to try out for the same position in a dance solo showcase. I appreciate that she acknowledges that she knows she should be supportive of her shy friend’s uncharacteristically bold move, even if it means more competition for the main character. Nevertheless, this is a bit too much petty drama for me. Plus, she takes way too long to apologize (weeks!) instead of bringing it to light and confessing it right away.
- Family-structure conservatives/divorced families may not like a comment that one girl’s dad left; she and her mom to struggle after a divorce, or that one family has two dads.
- There is a bit of lying (covering up awkward feelings).
- The images have a certain body type; there isn’t much room for hips or tummies in this gang.
