Rating: Not Recommended
I didn’t recommend the first book in the series based on the movie starring Anne Hathaway.
And the truth of the matter is: I can’t really recommend this one, either.
So why do I keep reading these books by Meg Cabot? Well, I’m hooked. I’ve got to find out what happens with Mia and Michael, because their budding romance was so sweet in book 1 that I could hardly stand it. Especially when Michael is all protective of Mia.
So if nothing else: let this be a lesson to all the parents out there: if nothing else, these books are addictive.
Book 2 is less edgy, but has less meaningful take-aways. Some of the same issues include:
- Borderline obsession with breast size (Mia feeling a bit shy in that area)
- Sex outside of marriage; prenancy; then eloping.
- A very muscular man, obsession with his looks, he becomes an underwear model
- People lying to each other
- Disrespectful, borderline hate of a grandparent
- (Might be an issue for some families:) Vegetarianism
- General lack of honor toward God, use of “Oh God,” and self-proclaimed atheism
- Repeated reference to self-actualization
It’s not as edgy as the first one, but still I don’t really recommend it. The themes aren’t as solid, so there isn’t as much to make it worth your time. That said, I have to find out what happens!!!!!
The good news is that I can pretend I’m just reading it for the sake of writing a review. You, my friend, might not have that same excuse (but I am not judging). Just don’t let your daughter read it unless you’re ready for her to think a lot about boys, french kissing, flunking math, and many other not-so-wholesome topics.

I have also reviewed the next book in the series: Princess in Love.
