Rating: Some Families may like it

This fantasy tale has the usual wizards, magic, and mystical dragons.  I remind myself: so does Lord of the Rings. There are a few other concerns that may (or may not) take it a step too far for your family:

  • Divination: the wizard looks into a stone to discern things- most notably that the main character is the next chosen dragon-master.
  • Telepathy: The dragon and the main character communicate via sharing thoughts in the mind (without speaking).
  • Disobedience, Lying & owning up to it: The children disobey, lie about it, and then own up to it to their wizard mentor later.

One thing I do like is that the lame dragon ends up being super powerful and useful in the end. There are strong flavors of not being too quick to write someone off based on outside appearance.

I’ll be interested to see what plots and character growth happen in the next few books in the series. If they go downhill, this one might not be worth it letting your little reader get hooked.
