Rating: Not for me
This one reminds me of Mary Poppins (of which I love the movie but didn’t live the book). Although not as overtly pagan, I just don’t like many aspects of it.
Concerns:
- There is a huge emphasis on luck, including a lesson on knocking on wood, crossing fingers, and superstitions. I’m not a fan.
- The premise is that five girls have parents who are too busy to notice the girls are gone.
- The school began when the head mistress used two of her three wishes on a wishbone she found when cooking a turkey by herself for Thanksgiving because her parents were too busy to cook with her.
- The school is competitive, with the girls always being ranked against each other each week. Not. A. Fan. of kids having to compete all the time against each other. (Can’t we all be rewarded for good behavior if well-deserved?)
- The kids eat birth day cake for several meals, including breakfast.
- When a girl is lost the headmistress is relatively unconcerned and gives up looking for her for a silly reason. Just sort of an odd choice to underplay losing the group to young children.
The writing was so-so, and although there were some creative bits, the plot and the characters choices were more uncohesive than I like. Just wishing to get what you want is a cheap explanation.
