Rating: My bookshelf

Reading Level: Early Elementary

A small boy struggles with wanting to be popular and makes some big mistakes in the process. In the end he takes responsibility. Important: I do NOT recommend the first book in the series, EllRay Jakes is not a Chicken.

Potential minor concerns:

  • EllRay mentions someone hating their siblings.
  • EllRay struggles with wishing his family had cool stuff or something to brag about.
  • EllRay steals from his dad (and thankfully has to suffer tough consequences).
  • EllRay is blackmailed into going into the girls bathroom.
  • I do NOT recommend the first book in the series, and for more info see my review of EllRay Jakes is not a Chicken.
  • General negativity about Valentine’s Day, girls, and his parents kissing.

Overall the book has strong themes of consequences for poor choices and of what it means to earn respect.
