Rating: Needs Parent Supervision
Reading Level: Early Elementary
An aspiring girl detective and her service dog solve a neighborhood mystery, while battling symptoms of her Juvenile Arthritis. I didn’t think the plot resolution was amazing, but if your kid is interested and needs something to read, it’s probably ok.
Possible (?) concerns:
- Luck. Wednesday says Wednesday is her lucky day.
- A neighborhood bully shoots verbal daggers at Wednesday.
- The best friend dresses like a rabbit, eats carrots, and hops around. I know it’s weird but I don’t like it when kids consistently dress to pretend to be a particular animal.
- Wednesday’s mom (?) wears a hijab (head covering). This doesn’t bother me, but might be good to be aware in case your child asks what for. (See image below.)
Great exposure to a girl with ambitions despite her disabilities. I’d just remind my kid we don’t believe in luck, and that we don’t bully people who have disabilities, and that we dress like a human except for special occasions! I liked Book 2: New Pup on the Block much better.
