Rating: My bookshelf
Reading Level: Middle School
You definitely want to read in order; don’t start here with Book 4. Here are links to my reviews of Book 1: The Unwanteds, Book 2: Island of Silence, and Book 3: Island of Legends.
Possible Concerns (Spoiler Alert!):
- Human Slavery. The portrayal is rather mild in this book compared to Book 3, which follows two kids captured and tortured in slavery. In this book, there is a rescue operation, but not a lot of details of what it is like for the captives.
- Violence. Some fights among warring enemies.
- Romance. There is a bit more of teenage emotions, feelings, noticing features of the opposite sex in a slightly romantically interested way, a kiss. Also two magical creatures exchange some romantic words. In my opinion, there is nothing inappropriate for middle school age level, but it is there.
The reading level might be mid-late elementary, but there is a bit of violence and romance in the series that might be a bit much. For Middle Schoolers, I’d put it in my bookshelf.
