Rating: My bookshelf
Reading Level: Early Elementary
Many of Dav Pilkey’s books are not for me, but I generally like the Ricky Ricotta series.
Possible Concerns:
- Typical superhero story violence.
- Name calling. Nincompoops, fools, stupid.
- Extended Family drama. Ricky’s cousin is portrayed as annoying. She disturbs his peace and ruins his pond by putting pink bubble bath in it. Ricky loses his temper.
Things I liked:
- Ricky has a good relationship with his parents.
- Forgiveness. Ricky asks for forgiveness and works to make amends.
- This easy read is a hybrid between chapter book and graphic novel. It seems to be a great way to help reluctant readers keep reading.
Overall, this action-packed book is easy to read. I’m not a huge fan of the name-calling, but the good stuff about forgiveness and making amends outweighs the bad.
