Rating: My bookshelf
Reading Level: Mid-Elementary, Late Elementary
Please don’t think the “My bookshelf” rating means I actually liked this book. This was not End-Game-tier Marvel material. Unfortunately, it was as predictable as an episode of Full House.
Even the illustrator got bored and stopped paying attention when he accidentally portrayed Captain America getting punched when the text said he was the one dealing the hit. Whoops.
However, as far as Marvel is concerned, there are a few things to like, and very few concerns (besides the aforementioned lack of literary substance).
Possible Concerns:
- Violence. The usual war/violence of a marvel production. Fist fighting, shooting rays and bullets, kidnappings, chemical injections, war on evil, Hydra Nazi remnants
- Promiscuity. It’s actually not that bad and goes under things I liked (see image of Black Widow below). However admittedly she is in a full body spandex suit, so you decide whether it’s a concern.
Things I liked:
- Lack of Promiscuity. Alright, yes Black widow is in a full-body spandex suit, but the neckline is not diving past her belly button, and the chest is not insanely voluptuous. As far as comics go, I’m calling this a huge win. See image below.
- Teamwork. Cap learns to rely on others.
- Old-fashioned ways and new Tech working together. Cap learns to embrace tech and all it’s advantages.
- Chapter book. This could be a great hybrid chapter book for a kid who tends to prefer comics. It feels like a graphic novel in many ways.
Overall, if your kid is super into this kind of thing, you certainly could do worse. Just make sure it isn’t a gateway book into the comics that often look like p*rn*graphy. As a side note, if you or your kid struggles with p*rn, be sure to check out the Plucky internet filter, which my friend built to help you in the battle: pluckyfilter.com
