Rating: My bookshelf

Reading level: Late Elementary, Middle School

Strong themes of love, and there being no fear in love. Several references to Jeshua, a Jesus figure whose teachings about love and light guide the main character. It is clear the author is a Christian, even though I don’t know if all the theology is 100% correct.

Possible Concerns:

  • Murder. When poisoned by a spirit of fear, a main character kills another. A doctor under the same spirit tries to murder the main character with a poisonous injection. A hunter under the same spirit kills a friendly dragon.
  • Evil Spirits/ Occult ceremony. A community of humans under a spirit of fear participate in a sacred ceremony that invites an evil spirit in, puts them in terrible pain, and then releases them in ecstasy. It is weird and clearly the author intends it to be evil and does not condone it.
  • Medical practitioner abuse. See above about the doctor.

Things I liked:

  • Healthy parent relationship. The boy and his mom are close and she teaches him to be a light.
  • Loving your enemy. The boy loves hi enemies and tries to develop empathy for them.
  • Teaching Biblical principles even when it is banned. The mother prays to God even when it is banned. She prays for her son and teaches him about Jeshua (Jesus) even though it is forbidden.
