Rating: Not for me

Reading Level: Early Elementary; Mid-Late Elementary

Although I like some books in this series, this one leans a little to heavily on magic. Long ago, a troll removed Anna’s memories of magic. Now, Anna wants her memories back, and she visits a troll who claims to have the magic to return them to her.

Possible concerns :

  • Stranger danger. Anna goes into a strange troll’s house.
  • Sorcery. Anna tries to get her memories back by way of magic. A troll makes a potion and does some chanting to attempt the cure.
  • Very minor romance. Anna and Kristoff tease each other and it says it’s because they “like” each other.

Things I liked:

  • No obvious political agendas.
  • Magic didn’t work. Kristoff is very skeptical of the magic, and it does not end up working after all.
  • Family. In the end Anna realizes having family to remind her is a wonderful way to hold on to memories.

I just generally like others in the series (they are less dependent on the occult) and I’d take a pass on this one.

I’d encourage readers to check out my reviews of Book 1: All Hail the Queen, and Book 9: Anna Takes Charge, both of which I liked a bit more.
