Rating: My bookshelf

Reading Level: Early Elementary

Before he was King and before he fought Goliath, David was a shepherd boy. This book captures his imaginary play fighting while he was still dreaming about being a warrior. He ends up with more than he bargained for when a real lion attacks his flock.

Possible concerns:

  • Peril. There is a real lion and a real hunt.
  • Race? I’m not sure if this is relevant but it seems like a missed opportunity to represent David as having the dark hair and coloring of a typical of a Middle Eastern boy.

Nevertheless, due to the clean content I still would allow this to live on my bookshelf, which is a rare compliment these days. :)
