The kids and I definitely laughed as we started this book (you have to be in a silly mood). But I’m not sure if the attitudes that came through make it a keeper. Read in to decide for yourself.
Possible Concerns:
- Devaluing others. The Chickens call the squirrel “Dumb” and say devaluing things. They tell the squirrel he is a common, boring, ordinary creature and nobody would want him as a pet. Also, they insult his IQ with comments like “Your poor shape knowledge means I can’t respect you. You should go now.”
- UFOs. Spoiler alert: it turns out to be a barbeque.
- Boy with feminine name. A boy chicken is named Poppy. This might be a plus for some families, I’m not sure what to do with it but wanted to flag it for parents to decide. Poppy is one of the four main chicks but not a leader and doesn’t say much.
- References to Eating Chickens. The chicks make comments that nobody eats chickens and the dog asks the reader to not break their bubble. This might be a positive for vegetarian families but could also be trouble for families with picky/mindful eaters who don’t want to take on that battle right now.
- Big Cast. Even with the profiles in the front, I had a hard time following/distinguishing between the four main chicks.
I’m interested in screening another Chicken Squad Book to figure out if the salty elitist attitudes persist or if we can continue to enjoy the silly humor.
