Rating: Not for me
Reading Level: Mid Elementary
A power-hungry squirrel obtains the ability to grant wishes and quickly gets prideful and out of control. Disaster humbles him (sort of).
Possible Concerns:
- Magic, and lots of it
- A human wizard, a bear wizard, and lots of animals asking for wishes
- Wishes granted with magic wands
- Potty humor: A magic wand gets stuck in a giant bunny’s diaper
- Insensitive humor. The wizard turned his cat into a frog, and Cat longs to be a cat again. Despite the kind ask, the wizard seems to find humor in cat’s misery.
Although it’s creative and silly, this just isn’t one of my favorites. I liked how teenagers with phones are insensitive and moms with endangered babies go Mama bear. But the humor sometimes just doesn’t model kindness and I’d hate that calloused heart humor to rub off on my kids. I recognize I’m being super conservative and this book would likely be fine for many families.
