Rating: Not for me

Reading Level: Early Elementary , Mid Elementary, Late Elementary

I liked Book 1 in the Heartwood series: A True Home, but after reading this one to my kids as a read-aloud, I regretted it.

Possible Concerns:

  • Superstition. There is mention that in the fernwood forest bad things happen only in threes.
  • Pagan holiday. There is a St.Slumber holiday which is a mock up of Santa Clause’s Christmas, with gifts, but worse…. Read on.
  • Crediting creation to a saint instead of God, St. Slumber is given credit for giving creatures their natural gifts: “The story goes that he was the one who gave us animals out gifts. Thick fur to stay warm, big bellies to hold lots of food, and strong noses to smell food under snow. You know, all the things to help us make it through winter.” These gifts should be credited to God alone, not to a Santa Claus figure.

I skipped parts as I was reading, but even so, I just don’t think it’s worth it. I wish I had taken a pass.
