Rating: Not for me
Reading Level: Middle School
I don’t mean to be disrespectful to the author, but this book just wasn’t for me. I couldn’t finish it. There were a lot of attitudes that I just don’t want my kids copying.
Concerns:
- Disrespect to parents. “My parents are absolutely zero help…. Like how old do you think I am? Three?”. “What was [my dad] even thinking?” “Why do parents always put their own selfish career goals ahead of their kids’ friendships?” “I’ll probably end up dead, and then they’ll be sorry!”
- Lack of gratitude/Entitlement. Her dad tries to cheer her up with a happy meal, she complains that happy meals are for kids, and the milkshake was too melty.
- Poor body image. Knocks her brown hair, jealous of friend’s red hair, calls herself a potato.
- Oversexualizing. “Did you see how hot Jack P. looked today?”
- Co-dependency. The main character chooses a lot of co-dependency behaviors with regard to her best friend.
- Potty/Body humor. Cartoon pictures of bras, jokes that she smells like pee.
- Use of the terms: “Sucks” , “OMG“,…
Perhaps it gets better if I read on, but I just didn’t have the desire to read more negativity.
As an alternative I would recommend these books: The Terrible Two or Friday Barnes, Girl Detective.
