Rating: My bookshelf
Reading Level: Mid Elementary, Late Elementary
Landon wonders whether everything we see is by chance. He slips into a dreamy fantasy world which reminds him of the creator and author of all things.
Possible Concerns:
- Whimsy. Some of the fantasy is really disconnected. I don’t mind fantasy, but this book was a new level of nonsensical events, much like Alice in Wonderland.
- Mild Peril. There are a few scary moments (e.g., arrows flying, hypnotism, and chess pieces attacking). I expect everything is appropriate for a typical mid-elementary audience.
Overall, for me it was a bit too disconnected fantasy, like how Alice in Wonderland is sometimes nonsensical. To be fair, one of the themes is whether the world is chaos or whether it is by design, so that might have played into the chaotic feel.
I appreciate the overall goal of pointing to our creator God. I also really liked Book 2 in the series, and you need to read this one first.
