A 13-year-old ranger and his best friend plan to take back a castle that has been lost to treachery. The ranger’s love interest is being held hostage inside.

Possible Concerns (Spoiler Alert!):

  • Fake Sorcery. Illusions and other means are used to try to terrify enemies. Although no sorcery is posited to the reader, there is a lot of references to sorcery to intimidate and distract.
  • Useof the terms, “damn,” ” hell,” and “Oh god.” Notice god is used in lower case. There is not much reference to the God of the Bible.
  • Romance. A kiss on the lips and confessions of love.
  • Hypnotism. A villain uses hypnosis to obtain intel and control people.
  • One reference to a object having magic.
  • Peril. Sword fights, arrows, punches to the jaw, knives, wrestling fights, etc.
  • References to pagan gods and demons. The sorcery intimidation strategies are designed play into the superstitions of the enemy. Other references come from the norse-like warriors who say things like by so-and-so’s beard, where so-and-so is a diety.

The romance bumps it up to at least middle school school age for my family.

Definitely read the books in order. Here are links to my reviews of Book 1, Book 2, Book 3, Book 4, Book 5, Book 6, Book 7, and Book 8.
