Rating: Needs Parent Supervision

Reading Level: Middle School

The friends set out to rescue the King of Skandia. They end up needing rescue for themselves.

Nothing new to worry about; if the other books were ok with you so also will this one be.

Possible Concerns (Spoiler Alert!):

  • Use of the terms, “damn,” ” hell,” and “Oh god.”
  • Romance. A kiss on the cheek.
  • Peril. Sword fights, arrows, punches to the jaw, knives, wrestling fights, prisoners, etc.
  • References to pagan demons, and a treacherous people group is described as being God’s forgotten.
  • Middle-Eastern Villains. The desert-dwelling villains wear blue scarves to cover their faces so that only their eyes show. It reminds me of burkas, or other Middle Eastern/East Asian dress. I like that there are strong allies with middle-eastern/East Asian feel too. I think this was really good choice by the author to avoid racism, etc. Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning and uplifting to your child that the allies were from the same areas, and we need to remember that to combat any racist tendencies that we might notice.

Definitely read the books in order. Here are links to my reviews of Book 1, Book 2, Book 3, Book 4, Book 5, Book 6, Book 7, and Book 8.
