A young, incompetent king longs to be a light to his people. He is tutored by ghosts of Einstein and other physicists regarding properties of light.

Possible Concerns:

  • Ghosts. The ghosts of Einstein and other physicists are tutors.
  • Occult. A witch, dark spirits, a magic candle.
  • Peril/Murder. The witch admits to poisoning the main character’s parents.
  • Prayer to a candle. The main character says something like, “Oh great candle, show me how to be a light.”

Things I liked:

  • No discernible political agenda. The author seems to really just want to help people understand Physics.
  • Being a light. The king’s desire is to be a light to his people. This could lead to great conversations about what it means to be a light, and how we can reflect the Light of the World to those around us.

This story has a bit more of the occult as compared to Book 1 or Book 2 in Fairy Tale Physics. (I actually think the older version of the cover, displayed below with the girl on it, makes the evil look way worse than it was in the book.) I was able to follow the physics the best in Book 1, Newton’s Laws: A Fairy Tale, and my favorite is Gravity: A Fairy Tale. I still enjoyed this one and learned a bit about light, even if I didn’t fully grasp all the concepts about light that were introduced.

Here are my reviews of all of the Fairy Tale Physics books:

An older version of the cover. The cover suggests a darker story than I experienced in the text.
