Rating: My bookshelf

Reading Level: Late Elementary, Middle school (A but long for Mid Elementary, but content is appropriate for that age.)

A clean fantasy with a girl protagonist and no romance, which is very refreshing. It wasn’t my favorite story, but I just had to know how it finished, so I kept reading.

Possible Concerns:

  • Fantasy. Magic pots, enormous poison-tongued turtles, and giants.
  • Peril. Relatively mild. Attacking animals, slavery, danger, all tastefully done for the audience.
  • Unstable hopes. While the protagonist ends of choosing joy even in uncertainty, it is worth a conversation with your reader about how we choose joy even in uncertainty because we trust God is in control, and because Jesus has rescued us from the certainty of death.

In the book, they hope for a man to come save them, but we already have had a savior come rescue us. It would be best to remind your reader of this.
