Rating: My bookshelf, with minor parent supervision

Reading Level: Early Elementary

Rosa and her grandmother adventure to a neighboring island. Rosa’s positive impact on the island is growing. I like how she’s under the authority of her grandma, who is a positive role model. I also like how they solve problems and help those in need.

The potential concerns are:

  • Potty humor. A whale makes a giant stinky pooh, and there is discussion about how animals eat it-yuck!
  • Environmental Agenda. The author is (perhaps rightly so) extremely critical of trash that washes up on the island’s shore every day. There are comments about humans needing to consume less.
  • Bullying. Rosa stands up to crabs who are intentionally leaving out a crab with a unattractive shell (made from human trash).
  • Peril. Rosa ends up on a raft in a storm.

If you like this one, you’ll adore Milway’s Hotel Flamingo series.
