Rating: Needs Parent Supervision

Reading Level: Mid Elementary, Late Elementary

The Superheroes navigate several challenges: villains; an oppressive law prohibiting them from using their superpowers; lack of funding; and the dynamics of family life, particularly with a mom temporarily working outside the home and a Dad with a new appreciation for what his wife manages.

Possible Concerns:

  • Using the Lord’s name in vain. “God. No.” – a teenager embarrassed. “Oh my God… Yes!”-an eccentric woman who realizes a baby has outstanding superpowers.
  • Husband lies to his wife, trying to cover so she won’t worry. He also hides some exciting news from her for the same reason.
  • Kids talking back. The parents want the kids to lay low; the kids want to help fight villains through more than just babysitting. They argue a little bit.
  • It defines who I am.” Dash says his superpowers define him. Might be good to have a conversation with your kid about what defines them.
  • Dating. The teenager is planning on a date and gets stood up, for what it’s worth.

Regarding the first bullet point, I used an eraser and my kid used crayon to cover the remains. We talked about how reading something affects how we think. It was great to do together:

  • Near the beginning of Chapter 8 (p. 53)
  • The end of Ch 11 (p. 75)
  • Near the end of Ch 14 (p. 92)
